LSODance Company Audition F.requently A.sked Q.uestions

Ready to audition but not sure what to expect? Do you have questions? Check out our F.requently A.sked Q.uestions list below

Who should audition for Company?

The Company Training Program is for students with a strong interest in Company without persuasion from parents. Boys and Girls ages 10 -17 who want advanced training are welcome to audition. Company dancers take multiple classes 1 to 3 days weekly & participate in competitions, performances, conferences & workshops in and out-of-state. If you are not interested in advanced training, competitions, touring, etc. or you already have a full extra-curricular schedule, consider general studio classes.

What happens during auditions? When are results posted?

Once dancers register and pay the non-refundable fee, they get a number to wear on the front of  their torso for the audition process. They take a series of classes that include a warm-up, across the floor movement and short combinations which they audition in small groups. Students also present a self-choreographed 60 - 90 sec. solo in the style of their choice for LSOD staff. All students should attend both days.  Audition results are usually posted within a week after auditions are over.

AUDITION CLASSES FOR AGES 10 TO 12:

All students ages 12 and under must take all classes on the schedule for the audition process in order to be considered for full Company membership.

AUDITION CLASSES FOR AGES 13 - 17:

All students ages 13 and up must take all classes on the schedule for the audition process in order to be considered for full Company membership. However, during the regular season students 13+ may opt out of certain classes.

I am 13+ and I want to audition but I don’t want to do all of the classes.

We realize that older students may not be trained in tap, but have great hip hop skills, or may be really strong in ballet/modern but not versed in hip hop etc. Don’t worry! You can still audition. Students 13+ will take all classes during auditions for the experience, but may opt to only take certain classes during the Sept. - June season, to be considered for Company membership.

What should I do for my solo audition?

Dancers will do a 60-90 second solo for LSOD staff. No other dancers will be in the room. Dancers can choose any music & genre of dance that best displays their confidence, personality, creativity & skills. Solos must be original, not from YouTube, TikTok, a school dance team etc. Movement/music must be age appropriate. Have fun! Routine must be choreographed - not a freestyle - with movement they can execute safely, that highlights their skills & strengths.

What if my solo is longer than 90 seconds.

There is a 5 second grace period. After 95 seconds the music will be stopped. However, dancers should be prepared to perform their solo more than once if asked.

What should dancers wear/bring to Company auditions?

The attire is leotards and tights for ladies, white t-shirt and black tights/athletic shorts for gentlemen, plus ballet, tap, jazz shoes/bare feet as needed. (Make sure tights are convertible). Secure hair back and away from the face, in a bun if hair length allows. CLEAN gym shoes can be a substitute for hip shoes. Bring healthy snacks/water. Avoid items with allergens like nuts. Parents should not keep/drop off items for students. Dancers should keep what they need with them in their bag.

Can Parents watch auditions?

Only LaShelle’s Staff members and those who are auditioning will be allowed in the studio. No parents or guests are allowed to watch auditions.

What advice would you give dancers preparing for the auditions?

Dancers should arrive in a timely manner, and take care of any bathroom/personal needs before auditions begin. Come in dressed, ready to learn and show personality. Be polite and professional. Any dancer who is talking or exhibits poor behavior and/or etiquette may be asked to leave. We appreciate those who choose to audition and highly recommend that dancers who are not selected this year audition again next year.

What if I am not selected for Company?

Dancers not selected for Company this year, may be referred to our Workshop program or general classes for more training.   General studio classes are a great way to get involved in the studio and do not require an audition.

What if I cannot attend auditions but would like to join Company?

Company membership is by audition only. If you are unable to attend auditions this time, please email us at LaShellesDance@gmail.com so we can notify you regarding your audition options. Rare exceptions will be made (e.g. severe illness/injury) for dancers to audition via video after the in-person auditions have occurred.
