LSODance Company Audition Information

Missed August auditions but still want to try out for Company? Do you have questions? Check out our F.requently A.sked Q.uestions list below

What if I cannot attend auditions but would like to join Company?

Company membership is by audition only. If you are unable to attend auditions or missed August auditions this time, please email us at LaShellesDance@gmail.com so we can notify you regarding your audition options. Exceptions will be made as available for dancers to audition via video or technique class evaluation after the August auditions have occurred.

Who should audition for Company?

The Company Training Program is for students with a strong interest in Company without persuasion from parents. Boys and Girls ages 7 -17 who want advanced training are welcome to audition. Company dancers take multiple classes 1 to 3 days weekly & participate in competitions, performances, conferences & workshops in and out-of-state. If you are not interested in advanced training, competitions, touring, etc. or you already have a full extra-curricular schedule, consider general studio classes.

What happens during auditions? When are results posted?

In person auditions take place every August and include a solo & a series of classes in ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary. Students wear an audition number and are adjudicated by LSOD staff. After this, virtual or late auditions may be considered throughout the season. Dancers register and pay the non-refundable fee, then receive instructions for the audition process - either virtual or in-person.     Audition results are usually posted within a week after auditions.

Virtual Auditions:

Students age 7- 17 have to submit two dance videos: 1) a self-choreographed 60 - 90 sec. solo in the style of their choice and 2) a video doing the audition combination that is sent to them via video link by LSOD.   Email LaShellesDance@gmail.com if you missed August auditions and are interested in a virtual audition.

In-Person Late Auditions

Students age 7-17 may be given the opportunity to participate in select LSOD technique classes, during which they will be evaluated for membership in Company. Students will wear an audition number during class and will also have to present a a self-choreographed 60 - 90 sec. solo in the style of their choice. Email LaShellesDance@gmail.com if you missed August auditions and are interested in a late, in-person audition.

What should I do for my solo audition?

Dancers will do a 60-90 second solo for LSOD staff. No other dancers will be in the room. Dancers can choose any music & genre of dance that best displays their confidence, personality, creativity & skills. Solos must be original, not from YouTube, TikTok, a school dance team etc. Movement/music must be age appropriate. Have fun! Routine must be choreographed - not a freestyle - with movement they can execute safely, that highlights their skills. Moves & music must be age appropriate.

What should dancers wear for Company auditions?

The attire is leotards and tights for ladies, white t-shirt and black tights/athletic shorts for gentlemen, plus ballet, tap, jazz shoes/bare feet as needed. Secure hair back and away from the face, in a bun if hair length allows. CLEAN gym shoes can be a substitute for hip shoes.

I am 13+ and I want to audition but I don’t want to do all of the classes.

We realize that older students may not be trained in tap, but have great hip hop skills, or may be really strong in ballet/modern but not versed in hip hop etc. Don’t worry! You can still audition. Students 13+ may opt to only take certain classes during the Sept. - June season, to be considered for Company membership.

What advice would you give dancers preparing for the auditions?

Dancers should arrive in a timely manner, and take care of any bathroom/personal needs before auditions begin. Come in dressed, ready to learn and show personality. Be polite and professional. Any dancer who is talking or exhibits poor behavior and/or etiquette may be asked to leave. We appreciate those who choose to audition and highly recommend that dancers who are not selected this year audition again next year.

What if I am not selected for Company?

Dancers not selected for Company this year, may be referred to our Workshop program or general classes for more training.   General studio classes are a great way to get involved in the studio and do not require an audition.

Can Parents watch auditions?

For in-person auditions only LaShelle’s Staff members and those who are auditioning will be allowed in the studio. No parents or guests are allowed to watch auditions.
